could searchme be better than google?
Posted on | January 27, 2009 |
this new search engine allows you to actually preview your the pages where your results lie in full color before you click on them. why didn’t anyone think of that before?
you can even make a “stack” which is all of your favorite sites - i called mine “my daily spinach” - all in a visual pile. no clicking through bookmarks. i like it!

Nope. A visual preview of a webpage doesn’t give much benefit to the actual content of the website. Try using SearchMe for a few minutes and you’ll quickly get tired of its Flash-like interface and lack of beneficial content. Plus Google’s crawling index is much bigger — when you search for “stroller” on Google, you get about 10.7 million results. SearchMe doesn’t even indicate how many results they’re giving you, which most likely means it’s not comparable to Google’s. How can you find the site you’re looking for if SearchMe hasn’t even crawled the site?
Plus if you’re looking for images to begin with, just use Google Image search.

Mary, you sound like you work for google.

dont think cool functionalties of any search engine necessarily makes for a “better search engine”… i have to agree with mary in that a good search engine depends on the quality of the indexing… not only based on the volume of search results it can output, but also based on the quality in relevancy to the keyword or keyword phrase that a user might search for.
def think there’s something that other popular search engines could take away from searchme’s interface, though.

I agree with you guys which is why I couldn’t name this article “SearchMe is Better Than Google” as I originally intended to. Also, Mary sent a henchwoman to my home threatening to eat all of my canned corn.
To Jenny’s point, I do wonder if SearchMe is worried about the big G integrating their visual search feature into their own.
The thing I <3 most about SearchMe is the “categories” feature. I think Google could benefit a lot from that. Unless there is already something like that that I just don’t know about yet.

Personally, I think people can parse through information a lot faster when it is listed a la Google since it is presented in a clean, orderly fashion. That being said, this is a cool tool to have and google/yahoo/whomever should integrate a preview function into their browser; maybe with a mouse-over –the flipping pages is cool but is too time consuming. I was really surprised on how quickly it pulled up the pages though.

Regarding my comment above, I think it’s much easier to train the human mind to do something that it is to design something that tries to “simplify” a process. That’s on of the reasons why google is so successful. People have trained themselves to sort search results via their interface. I’m not saying that searchme won’t be successful, it’s just that they volume of information isn’t currently presented in a fashion that allows a rapid enough mental review. Maybe with time…?

I LIKE. thanks. google still just as useful.

Makes sense GK. The best of both worlds would be if Google could have both options (SearchMe already does) AND the categories feature.

i like the fact that you can search on music and it plays automatically…and you can even create playlists that play in the background while you’re working. not to mention that you can share results by creating a stack and emailing it or posting it on your facebook page…or tweet it. can’t do that anywhere else. lots of pretty useful applications. may not be caught up to google’s index yet…but it’s only a matter of time.

I like that searchme has the set up with the pages arranged like that, but Mary is right it doesn’t tell you how many search results and that may be an inconvenience. Maybe if we gave them some suggestions they can improve it, but I’m not sure if Mary will enjoy that. lol

On a similar note, I just came across this website, http://www.facesaerch.com (note the swapped e and a in “saerch”) that I thought this thread would appreciate. FaceSaerch also uses the iTunes album browser interface that Searchme.com uses, which I think sucks for listing search results.
