i’m in love with a planter (to the tune of t-pain’s “i’m n luv wit a stripper”)
got the body of a potter
got a smooth, minimalistic silhouette, i see you
droppin’ low
comin down from the ceiling
to tha flo
yea she know what she doin’
yea yea yea
she doin that right thang
yea yea yea yea ea
i need to get her over to my crib and do that planting thang
cause i’m in love wit a planter
she droppin’ she drippin’ she usin’ (80% less water than a conventional planter)
she savin’ valuable floor space
i’m n luv with a planter
she drippin’ she swayin’ she swayin’
i’m not goin’ nowhere girl i’m stayin’
i’m in love with a planter

check out boskke’s new sky planter (minus the sad excuse for song lyrics) here.

byob op: bring their own bags or pay
anyone who has shopped recently at euro furniture superstore ikea has noticed that the plastic bags there are not free. has that deterred people from using them? the short answer is heyl yah! 92% or approximately 64 million less ikea bags were used last year. talk about results!
not to be left in the dust yet again by the rest of the world (ahem: metric system), new york city mayor michael bloomberg has proposed a tax on plastic bags across our city. if the proposal passes, that means that you will save 6 cents on every bag you decide not to take at grocery stores and other retailers. it’s just the extra nudge that people who ask for a plastic bag for a stick of gum or a bag of chips (you know who you are) need to think, yes think, for a moment about whether or not they really must have a bag in order to carry their purchases home.
of the 6 cents, 5 cents will go to the city and 1 cent will go to the participating store as an incentive fee. officials estimate that the plan will generate $16 million a year for our city, which is not too shabby. what they may have forgotten in their calculations is that new yorkers are pretty good at taking action when they know their hard earned bucks are at stake. i estimate/hope that we will actually use less plastic bags even if the city makes less money.
here are some reusable bag options that i’m feeling right now:

baggu bags in a rainbow of colors. the muted jewel tones are very en vogue right now.

flip and tumble’s easy to roll up bags

greenworldbags are sturdy and come in fun patterns

skn has cute designs like tomato and blueberry and will plant a tree for every bag you buy!

shagbags come with cute pouches and have cinches to hold all of your belongings safely inside.
shoutout to dave h for hooking me up with the story.

green is the way to “go”
ecocoffins by creative coffins are crafted from unbleached pulp which is made out of at least 60% recycled paper and wood pulp sourced from sustainable forests. each coffin weighs under 10kgs which drastically reduces the transportation (oil) costs associated with death baskets. why anyone would choose a traditional sarcophagus when these radical designs are out there is baffling to me.
hey, if you’re going to go through all that trouble customizing your ipod, why not your final resting place?

imagine your friends and family gathered around this beauty.

this is the one i’m eyeing for my own final resting spot. it’s called the comedian. “rest in peas.”
get it? chuckle.

Time: 4pm-8pm Friday, 2pm-7pm all weekend
Location: Habana Outpost (757 Fulton St. at S. Portland, Ft. Greene)
Cost: Free
What’s scarier than global warming and a market meltdown combined? How about The Basement of Blood at Habana Outpost. High school students from Brooklyn’s Green School have created ghoulish scenes from everyday garbage, and you can check out the recycled haunted house all weekend. “The Basement of Blood is the first project by Habana Works’ teen program, Break It Down. The program offers project-based internships to high school students that bring discarded resources back into use and on to the market.” All ages.

reach a zen-like state using your microwave
how awesome would it be to have fresh rice for lunch at work everyday? not only would it be cheaper than ordering from wok & roll, but you would know that each fluffy puff had no added oil or fat (unless you added some, in which case i applaud your crazy ways, but question your motives). a few of my co-workers and i had lofty aspirations to bring in a ricecooker, but the plan never became a reality due to the fact we were afraid of shut down by strict office officials (we have a rather intimidating kitchen staff).
to my amazement, i was introduced recently to a product that cooks rice in the microwave! cook-zen allows you to make delicious, low-calorie meals right in your nuke box.

the cooker isn’t cheap ($59.99), but if you consider the fact that $60 is the price of one dinner in NYC, the cook-zen pot seems like a pretty good deal. did i mention that it cooks ramen noodles too? where were you when i was in college, cook-zen pot?
my only concern is that a microwave rice pot might use more energy than a conventional ricecooker. if anyone has any thoughts on that, please enlighten the rest of us.
oh, and i’ve been looking everywhere for the cook-zen cupcake maker, but can’t seem to find it. if anyone can hook me up with any intel, i’d be much obliged.

clothing swap tonight!
![]()
Date: Monday, October 6th
Time: 9:00pm - 1:00am
Location: Botanica Bar (47 E Houston St, btw Mott and Mulberry)
Cost: Free
It seems as New Yorkers, your apartment is always a finely aligned puzzle. And whenever you add something new, everything has to be reorganized for your new treasures. Well, sometimes things get left out of the adjustment and - if your like me - you end up with that pile of treasures buried in the corner of the room or back of the closet. Thrift On is a great way to share those beautiful bits with perfect strangers. Bring the stuff you don’t want anymore, take someone elses stuff home. Clothing is okay too. DJ Shakey and Man “S” spin 2nd hand records while you rummage and sip drinks. Sorry, 21+
Thanks to freenyc for the info.
