Ecotip#1: paperbackswap.com or swaptree.com, where you can recycle all your old books/movies/cds for new ones and someone else will love the ones you don’t want anymore. On the same token I reuse all the envelopes people send me stuff in for them.
#2: I’m sure someone’s already mentioned this but all plastic bags go to cat litter bags. If I don’t need cat litter bags I use a canvas bag for my shopping. Also, some pet stores will let you bring back the plastic box the litter came in and refill it at a discounted price.
#3: I take the paper from work that’s been printed on and going to be recycled/thrown away and use that as scrap paper at home (shopping lists, boggle games, etc)
#4: I save all the clothes I grow out of/don’t want any more and take them to clothing swaps so someone else will love my old clothes and I get new exciting clothes.

I vote for Nina! That’s actually more like 7 or 8 tips!

I throw my used coffee grains down the drain every day. I have been doing this for years; my sink smells fresh and has never been clogged.
I sprinkle peppermint oil around the house as a mouse repellant. The smell is divine and the mice stay far, far away.

Instead of buying extra tupperware, more plastic containers to store bulk foods, leftovers etc. clean yogurt & glass containers and use them for storage in your fridge.
also: Vinegar is extremely efficient and non toxic, when it comes to cleaning surfaces, mirrors, glass, or disinfecting kitchen sinks, bathroom sinks, toilets, kids play areas etc dilute it 50/50 with water in a spray bottle–works great–no need for chemical cleaners-it’s all natural and kills bacteria — also great for cleaning wood floors, when diluted with water-2 cups to half a bucket full of warm water is plenty.
also: recycle your mags, pages of magazines can be used as decorative wrapping paper for small to medium gifts–and you can contact schools to see if art departments have use for them for collages–(if content is appropriate for students)
also:turn the lights off when you leave a room that you are not using!
also: re-use your metro card and fill it up-don’t keep buying a new one and throw it away!!
also: donate empty coffee cans, plastic lids, egg cartons to local pre-schools–the kids can use them for art projects-they love it!

Thanks for the tips guys. So far they are fantastic! I especially like Nina’s paperswap, Judith’s peppermint oil and Steph’s vinegar idea.

I like to make sure everything including my neighbors back yard has all their plastic containers in a recycle bin every week making the environment cleaner. Also I look around my yard for papers flowing in the wind and back yards and recycle them.

#1. My bf and I have swapped our plastic bottles for aluminum sigg bottles. There permanent and come in a bunch of cute designs.
#2. We never do groceries unless we carry reusable bags with us. Ikea’s big blue bags are awesome when your shopping for a lot of groceries. If we don’t have bags, we don’t buy. In the event of small every day purchases, we always carry a reusable bag that folds so it fits in my bag and he can clip it on his jeans/pants. If places insist you need a bag to make a purchase, tell them to put a PAID sticker on your items instead.
#3. When buying takeout, we bring tupperware that’s the same size as the combo platters come in and ask them to fill that instead.
#4. I worked in the fashion industry and there was a lot of waste when it came to fabrics and trims so I always made it a point to collect these items and label them to be donated to Material for the Arts or I would reach out to a professor back in college to come pick up items I know her students would benefit from.
#5. Don’t just turn off you lights and appliances when not in use. Make sure you UNPLUG everything that is not being used. Just because something is off doesn’t mean its still not generating energy. Try it for a month, I guarantee you’ll save money. Every penny counts.
#6. If your trying to find better use for your plastic bags. Be creative with them. You can fuse them together to make an array of things. Check out Etsy for great ideas.

Hi I wanted to say to all the people who juice they can use the vegetable and fruit collected in the waste container as fertilizer for indoor plants or if you have a garden outside. I juice 3 times a week and the waste goes back in the soil which helps my flowers in the spring because the soil gets lots of nutrients.

Ecotips!
1. one can donate his or her old clothes, shoes, household items (i.e. bedding, kitchen supplies) etc. to the Salvation Army or a nearby Goodwill.
2. another option for trading not only books but also clothes is http://rehashclothes.com/
if you have some clothes that you believe might find a better home than via salvation army or goodwill, you can trade your dear item for another, newer, exciting item as well as post what you are looking for so that others can possibly provide a similar item which they were looking to get rid of anyway!
3. if you place a ‘no junk mail’ note on your mail box, you’ll receive less junk mail! thus saving more paper.
4. it’s easy to use the back of printed paper for notes and lists. make a pile for scrap paper and start today!
5. old appliances such as radios, toasters, modems, etc. can be taken apart and used for parts. one can sell them to a local repair/electrical shop instead of discarding them.
6. you can go to http://www.rbrc.org/consumer/ to check out where to find out where to drop off your rechargeable batteries from cell phones, cameras, laptops, etc.
7. if you have a puppy, or a doggy, let them play with plastic bottles and roll around with them! my puppy loves playing with empty soda bottles and generally crushes them for me so that when they are ready for disposal, more bottles can fit in the bin. aluminum cans can also be crushed before placing in the recycling bin/bag/box. Plastic, reusable bins are the preferred container of course.
8. you can donate various paper products, beans, beads, fabric scraps, ribbons, used paper clips, and trinkets, to kindergartens for craft-making
9. one can re-use [washed] meat trays from the super market as paint palettes!
10. old dried up flowers excrete great color when squeezed onto paper with warm water! one can use these old flowers for ‘paint’ before simply throwing them out.
11. i’m sure someone else has already said this, but if you use an aluminum water bottle it saves a lot of plastic waste every time your mouth is parched and you’re not at home.
12. use plastic lead pencils (or pens) instead of the old #2 style pencils. save some trees.
13. try to use electric stoves, grills, or ovens and microwaves over gas stoves.
14. use dishcloths for cleaning instead of paper towels.

1. Reuse your school supplies from year to year. I had one high school notebook that lasted me through college!
2. Set up free boxes on street corners in residential neighborhoods wherever you are. Make sure you put them out after the trash has been collected.
3. Learn how to fix your bike. Patching your own punctured tube, for instance, can save you over 90% of the cost of buying a new tube (and you’ll only have consumed a square inch of rubber).
4. Learn how to mend your clothes. If your grandma could do it, surely you can. If (when!) you become good at it, you can create new outfits out of old ones.
5. Use your time wisely! You need as much time for strategically saving the world as you can get!

1~ for my fav 3/4 or long sleeve shirts that are soft or i just like the color, i cut off the sleeves and make them leg warmers or fingerless gloves (just cut a thumb hole) and if i still like it, i save the left over scrap for other craft things
2~ i use old sheets and turn them into pillow cases or into those pillow case lining things just to give my pillow an extra protective layer
3~ other things i do with other clothes, cloth, i cut up and use as rags rather than buy new cloth to use as rags
4~ i love looking on craigslist to repurpose things. u can do wonders with spray paint! i.e. spray pain a bunch of random vases white, it looks awesome
5~ declutter & gather all ur old mags/books/working pens & pencils and donate them to hospital, library or school
6~ u know those baggage tags u get when going on a plane, i always take them off and use them as a link roller type thing b4 i throw it away
7~ if you have lots of used up or old crayons, get a soap mold and break it into pieces and melt them in the oven to make a new rainbow colored crayon in a cool shape
8~ if u don’t eat left overs, be nice and pack it up and give it to someone who wants them (homeless, college kids, etc)
9~ just use ur imagination and be resourceful, not everything needs to be new and shiny! not only will u save $$ but u feel good about not being wasteful
