High school students from Brooklyn’s Green School have created ghoulish scenes from everyday garbage, and you can check out the recycled haunted house all weekend. “The Basement of Blood is the first project by Habana Works’ teen program, Break It Down. The program offers project-based internships to high school students that bring discarded resources back into use and on to the market.” All ages.

zinio is offering one free online magazine subscription to let people try out their service. not only does the service save trees and the expensive fuel needed to transport heavy magazines all around the country, you don’t have to purchase an expensive piece of equipment like the amazon kindle below in order to use it. you can read the magazines of your choice right on your computer or iphone either on or offline. plus i love the fact that zinio lets you flip through pages just like you would with a traditional magazine so it’s more of an authentic feeling than reading a blog or webpage. other features like search and zoom make finding the info you want fast and easy.

we are all busy people, but i always thought that using our creativity and ingenuity to make costumes out of random odds and ends was the best part of halloween. so why is it that so many of us choose to go to big box retailers and buy generic costumes for $39.99 only to end up being one of 7 sexy policewomen with the same exact costume at a party?
this year, why not get started a bit early and craft your costume from stuff you already have. you can also head to your favorite thrift shop and make your costume for cheap! who wants to spend big bucks on something made out of 100% polyester that you’ll most likely never wear again?

never buy another envelope again
staples sells the most common size of envelopes, #10, by boxes of 500. yes, the envelopes are made of recycled paper, but what about the energy and gas it takes to assemble those envelopes and then deliver the heavy boxes to the store?
with the exception of those of us that own our own businesses, or just really like to send letters all the time, most of us will buy a box of 100 or 500 envelopes for $10-$30 because we need 1 envelope, use the 1 envelope, and leave the remaining 499 envelopes in a drawer in our desk until we need another envelope…someday.
if you’d prefer not to go through all that trouble, there’s an easier way. just make your own envelopes! here’s how:
take an envelope that you like (it can be one that you received in the mail so you don’t have to buy one), and after taking note of where the envelope is folded and glued, deconstruct it. then lay it on top of a piece of paper or magazine page that you want to recycle.

trace the outline of the envelope onto the paper
 |
cut along the line you traced and fold the piece of paper in the same way that the original envelope was folded. then glue where the original envelope was glued. you can decorate the envelope any way you like.
 |
voila! free and you won’t have that box of envelopes wasting any of your space. plus it looks pretty neat.
